The Painted Butterfly pattern uses raw edge applique and thread painting to create a colorful and fun design. Don’t be afraid of it, the pattern explains how to do every step.

· Background that measures 30” x 23”. This is tricky to pick in advance. Think about fabric choices when making this decision. It should help the Butterfly “pop” not hide. It is also fun if it has texture, like a linen.

 · Backing that measures 32” x 25” square

 · 1/2 yard of dark fabric for the base outline of the butterfly.

 · Dark fat quarter for the body that corresponds to the base outline.

 · Working from fat quarters, but they don’t all need to be, select 6 to 10 colors. This is a great pattern for stash busting.

 Additional Materials Needed:

· 1.5 yards of 12” wide Steam-A-Seam Lite 2 or something comparable

· Various weights of thread. Aurifil 40 and/or 50 wt work well for thread painting.

* Other colors as desired to match fabric

· “Sharp” type needles

· Batting (low loft poly with no shrinking) measuring 35” square

· Option: A light box will make things simpler

· Iron with NO steam

· Sharpie, pencil, pen and fabric markers or chalk

· Scissors for cutting potentially “gooey” items

· Fabric scissors

· Basic quilting notions and materials

· Alcohol swabs (They help get any gunk off the needle)

· Option: Teflon Coated Sheer Fiberglass Sheet from

www.mistyfuse.com. A larger size is great. NOT required.
